Islamabad: Pakistan has conveyed a warning from Saudi Arabia to Iran, urging Tehran to rein in its Houthi allies in Yemen and use its influence to halt attacks on the Kingdom, Reuters reported, citing sources.
According to Reuters, the warning carries particular significance in light of the defence agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.
The news agency cited Pakistani officials as stressing that any potential military role would remain strictly limited to defending Saudi territory.
Sources said the message to Iran was clear: it should rein in the Houthis or risk allowing a proxy conflict to escalate into a broader regional security crisis.
A senior regional diplomat told Reuters that Pakistan had conveyed the message to Iran within the past 24 hours, urging Tehran to use its influence over the Houthis to stop attacks on Saudi Arabia.
The news agency also cited a Pakistani source as saying Saudi officials had met senior Pakistani and Turkish military representatives in Riyadh to discuss coordinating their response.
According to the sources, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye agreed that their forces would not enter Yemen and that any response would be conducted from within Saudi territory.
Another Pakistani source told Reuters that no decision had yet been made on whether Pakistan would participate in retaliatory strikes.
The source said Pakistan’s military agreement with Saudi Arabia was defensive in nature and limited to protecting Saudi territory.
Pakistani forces could provide military, technical, ground or air support inside Saudi Arabia, according to the report, but would not participate in combat operations on foreign territory.
The Houthis attacked an airbase in Khamis Mushait and oil facilities in nearby Saudi cities on Tuesday, leaving 73 people injured.
According to the report, the strikes were among the largest attacks on Saudi Arabia since the war involving the United States and Israel against Iran began in February this year.
