Saudi Arabia’s military coalition has said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone attempting to enter Makkah’s airspace.
According to the Saudi-led coalition, the drone was intercepted before it could enter the restricted airspace surrounding Makkah and was successfully destroyed.
The coalition said the protection of the Two Holy Mosques was a “red line” and that necessary measures would be taken against threats posed by the Houthis.
Coalition spokesperson Maj Gen Turki al-Maliki said it was the second attempt by the Houthis to target Makkah. He said a ballistic missile had also been fired towards Makkah in July 2017.
Earlier on Tuesday night, warning sirens sounded in the Saudi cities of Jazan, Abha and Khamis Mushait amid concerns over possible attacks, although the alerts were withdrawn shortly afterwards.
On Monday, 13 civilians were injured in multiple ballistic missile and drone attacks carried out by Houthi forces against Saudi Arabia.
