Islamabad: A major obstacle in the appointment of a new opposition leader in the National Assembly has been removed after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf withdrew the court petition filed by former opposition leader Umar Ayub.
Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq is expected to make an important and formal announcement regarding the appointment of the new opposition leader during the National Assembly session scheduled for January 12.
Previously, the Speaker was unable to proceed with the appointment due to the matter being under consideration in court, as the ongoing legal proceedings had created a constitutional and procedural hurdle.
The next session of the National Assembly will commence on January 12, while National Assembly Adviser Muhammad Mushtaq stated that with the judicial front now closed, there will be no obstacle in the appointment of the new opposition leader.
He further said that following the opposition delegation’s return from Bangladesh, a meeting with Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq will be held next week, during which the process for appointing the opposition leader will be taken forward.
According to him, the Speaker of the National Assembly will make a key announcement regarding the appointment of the new opposition leader on January 12 in accordance with parliamentary rules.
It is worth noting that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had earlier announced its decision to withdraw the case related to the removal of former National Assembly member Umar Ayub from the position of opposition leader, effectively clearing the way for the new appointment.
