A passenger bus plunged into the Padma River in Dhaka, leaving at least 18 people dead, while several others are reported missing and rescue operations are ongoing.
According to Bangladeshi media reports, the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday evening, with authorities confirming 18 fatalities so far, while fearing the toll may rise.
Local rescue officials stated that around 5 pm, the bus lost control while being loaded onto a ferry, resulting in it falling into water approximately 30 feet deep and sinking.
There were around 50 passengers on board, some of whom were rescued, while 18 lost their lives, and efforts are underway to locate the remaining passengers.
Authorities said that women are also among the deceased, while the injured and rescued individuals have been shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Several passengers remain missing, and divers are assisting in search operations, although strong winds and heavy rain are making rescue efforts difficult.
