Bishkek: Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed solidarity with Iran, saying Moscow believes the country is fighting for its interests and freedom amid the ongoing conflict.
During a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Putin said it was unfortunate that the peace previously established in the region had not proved lasting.
The Russian president told Pezeshkian that Moscow expressed full solidarity with the Iranian people in their struggle to protect their interests.
Putin said Russia and Iran would continue maintaining their economic and trade relations despite the current military and political situation.
He added that Russia viewed Iran as fighting for its interests and independence.
During the meeting, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian thanked Putin for Moscow’s position on the war in Iran and the sanctions imposed in its aftermath.
Pezeshkian described Russia and Iran as strategic partners and said both countries were seeking to counter what he called unilateral actions by the United States.
The Iranian president accused Washington of aggressive and illegal actions, saying Iranian students, young people and other civilians had been killed.
Pezeshkian said Iran recognised Russia’s support during the current situation and, for that reason, Iran also stood with Russia.
