Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority has issued an alert over the risk of glacial lake outburst floods and landslides in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
According to NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Center, monsoon rainfall and rising temperatures have increased the risk of glacial lakes bursting, potentially triggering flash floods in mountainous and low-lying areas.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, Ghizer, Hunza, Nagar, Shigar, Gilgit, Roundu, Diamer, Astore, Skardu, Ghanche and Kharmang have been identified as vulnerable areas.
Neelum Valley in Azad Jammu and Kashmir has also been declared at risk.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan and surrounding mountainous areas face the risk of flooding and landslides.
NDMA has issued the alert in view of the potential hazards and advised authorities to remain vigilant in vulnerable areas.
