Washington: US President Donald Trump rejected a request from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to take action against Yemen’s Houthis, US news website Axios has claimed.
According to the report, the Saudi crown prince spoke with Trump twice by phone on Wednesday over the threat posed by the Houthis in the Red Sea.
Axios reported that Mohammed bin Salman urged the US president to take action against the Houthis, but Trump declined the request and refused to launch US action against the group.
The report said US military and civilian officials had been in contact with their Saudi counterparts in recent weeks.
US Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper also travelled to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday for emergency coordination meetings, according to the report.
Axios said both the Saudi Embassy in Washington and the White House declined to comment on the claims.
The development comes days after Yemen’s Houthi Ansar Allah group carried out attacks in Saudi Arabia that left 73 people injured, including women and children.
