London: Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said the debate over provinces should take place in the National Assembly rather than at business forums, stressing that democracy is the solution to Pakistan’s problems.
Speaking to the media in London, Bilawal said the PPP’s position on the provinces issue was clear and that if the existing system had failed, its shortcomings and possible solutions should be formally debated in the National Assembly.
He said no single political party could resolve Pakistan’s problems on its own, adding that all political parties must be engaged on issues of national and public importance.
Bilawal said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had the right to express his opinion, but the issue of provinces and the country’s administrative system should be discussed in parliament.
He added that Naqvi rarely attended parliament and should present his proposals there instead of discussing such matters at business forums.
The PPP chairman questioned why the system had failed and what the solution should be, saying these questions required an open debate in the National Assembly.
He said the country’s future could not be decided by a handful of businessmen and called for all political parties to be involved in discussions on national and public issues.
Turning to elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Bilawal said he had concerns over the electoral process and that the PPP wanted a parliamentary committee to be formed on electoral reforms.
He said whatever happened in the past should be left behind and efforts should now focus on ensuring that future elections are free and fair.
