The federal cabinet has officially approved the 27th Constitutional Amendment, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presiding over the meeting via video link from Baku, Azerbaijan. The session included a detailed review of the amendment and its various components.
The meeting was attended by senior cabinet members, including the defence minister, ministers for energy, interior, inter-provincial coordination, and several others, along with the law minister and the attorney general. The law minister briefed the cabinet on the draft amendment and presented an assessment of the proposals put forward by the Pakistan Peoples Party.
According to available information, key features of the proposed amendment include the creation of a new position titled Commander of Defence Forces, the establishment of a Federal Constitutional Court, the preparation of a unified seniority list for high court judges, and granting the Supreme Judicial Commission the authority to transfer judges between high courts or their regional benches.
Sources indicated that the Senate is expected to convene today, where the draft of the 27th Amendment is likely to be presented as a supplementary agenda item. The bill is expected to be referred to the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice to secure approval by Monday.
