Millions of people gathered across several countries to witness a total and partial solar eclipse, with parts of the world experiencing an unusual period of darkness during daylight hours.
The solar eclipse began at 8:34pm Pakistan time. A total solar eclipse was witnessed in Greenland, Iceland, Spain and Russia.
Europe witnessed its first total solar eclipse since 1999, while France, the United Kingdom and several other European countries experienced a partial eclipse.
The eclipse caused daylight to fade across several parts of Europe well before the usual sunset time, drawing large crowds outdoors to witness the rare astronomical event.
Millions of people gathered in open spaces to watch the daytime darkness, using special protective glasses to safely observe the eclipse.
Hundreds of people also gathered at the Royal Observatory in London to witness the partial solar eclipse. Many arrived at Greenwich Park with food and refreshments, turning the occasion into a picnic-like gathering.
A partial solar eclipse was also visible in parts of Africa, Canada and the United States.
