A new attendance record has been set during the ongoing fourth Test match between India and Australia, with over 350,700 spectators attending the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) over the course of five days.
According to a report by the renowned sports website Cricinfo, the previous record was set in 1937 when 350,534 cricket fans visited the ground.
Cricket Australia confirmed that on the fifth day of the match, 51,371 spectators attended the first session, with more fans expected to arrive.
This large number of spectators means that more people watched the 2024 MCG Boxing Day Test than the match played under the leadership of Sir Donald Bradman, when Australia faced England at the same ground in January 1937, which lasted six days.
The attendance for this Test match has been extraordinary, with daily figures reaching 87,000, 85,000, 83,000, 43,000, and over 51,000 spectators respectively.
The record attendance at the MCG was previously set during the 2022 T20 World Cup, when 90,293 spectators watched the India vs Pakistan match. Additionally, 82,507 people attended the India vs Zimbabwe match.
