Pakistan’s legendary fast bowler, known worldwide as the “Sultan of Swing,” Wasim Akram, has credited his cricketing success to former captain Imran Khan.
During an interview alongside English cricketers Michael Vaughan, Sir Alastair Cook, David Lloyd, and Phil Tufnell, Akram said that Imran Khan was undoubtedly the best captain he ever played under. He noted that Imran was not naturally gifted but achieved greatness through sheer hard work, determination, and resilience.
Wasim Akram emphasized that everything he achieved in cricket, both on and off the field, was due to Imran Khan’s guidance. He said that Imran always inspired the team with confidence, led from the front, and believed strongly in his abilities.
He further explained that while many considered him a naturally talented bowler, Imran Khan’s success was purely the result of hard work. Akram recalled that in 1976, Imran Khan even changed his entire bowling action — a highly difficult task — but he succeeded because of his unwavering determination.
Akram added that Imran demanded 100 percent effort from his players and never tolerated complacency. If a player underperformed due to lack of effort, Imran would reprimand them, but if someone gave their best and still failed, he accepted it and encouraged them.
It is worth remembering that Wasim Akram made his international debut in 1984 under Imran Khan’s captaincy. With Imran’s mentorship, Akram rose to become one of the greatest fast bowlers in the world. Later, under Imran Khan’s leadership, Pakistan won its first and only World Cup in 1992, where Wasim Akram was named the Man of the Match in the final.
