The Malaysian government has announced that, starting next year in 2026, individuals under the age of 16 will no longer be allowed to create social media accounts. The decision aims to protect minors from the increasing risks and harmful content circulating across online platforms.
According to media reports, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that users under 16 will not be permitted to create new social media accounts. He explained that an e-KYC system will be implemented across all platforms, requiring age verification through identification documents such as MyKad, passports, or digital IDs during registration.
Officials noted that the cabinet is making this decision due to the rising presence of harmful content, cyberbullying, and other dangerous situations affecting young children on online platforms. In response, the government is preparing to enforce stricter measures to ensure the online safety of minors.
Fahmi Fadzil added that this action falls under the Online Safety Act, which will come into effect on January 1, 2026. Some experts describe the restriction as a “necessary step” to safeguard children from harmful digital exposure.
