UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has strongly condemned the horrific suicide attack in Islamabad, describing it as a deeply tragic and heartbreaking incident. In a statement issued from London, she said the attack has caused immense sorrow and distress.
She stated that the thoughts and sympathies of the British government are with all the victims and their families during this painful time. The UK foreign secretary also reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to stand with Pakistan in the fight against terrorism and to continue cooperation against extremist violence.
It is worth noting that a suicide bombing occurred during Friday prayers at Khadija-tul-Kubra Mosque in the Tarlai area of Islamabad, resulting in the martyrdom of 31 people and injuries to dozens of others. According to police, the attacker detonated himself after being stopped from entering the mosque.
Sources confirmed that a cousin of the Inspector General of Islamabad Police was also among those who lost their lives in the attack. Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunfire shortly before the explosion, which created panic in the surrounding area.
Following the blast, police, army units, and Rangers cordoned off the area and tightened security, while all injured individuals were rushed to PIMS and Polyclinic hospitals. An emergency has been imposed in hospitals across Islamabad, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
