In view of the ongoing energy crisis, the Punjab Energy Department has submitted emergency recommendations to the provincial government, outlining potential measures related to fuel consumption, educational activities, and business hours.
According to sources, a proposal has been made to implement fuel rationing in Punjab similar to the federal government’s approach, while the introduction of a coupon or digital system is also under consideration to ensure fair distribution of petrol and diesel.
Additionally, restricting fuel supply to vehicles on specific days is being considered as part of efforts to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption and manage available resources more efficiently.
Under energy conservation measures, it has been recommended to announce holidays in educational institutions until April 15 and to introduce a hybrid learning system in schools, while strict work-from-home directives for private organizations are also being proposed to reduce energy usage.
Sources further stated that recommendations include a complete ban on unnecessary events, further reduction in market operating hours, and switching street lights to alternative modes after 10 pm to conserve electricity.
Similarly, proposals have been put forward to turn off LED billboards and decorative lighting to minimize energy wastage and ensure savings.
The report also includes recommendations to expand metro and bus services to promote public transport usage, aiming to reduce overall fuel consumption.
Sources added that the provincial government is currently reviewing these recommendations, and final decisions are expected to be announced soon.
