Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, upholding constitutional supremacy, promoting parliamentary democracy, ensuring the rule of law, and encouraging meaningful public participation in decision-making.
In his message on World Parliament Day, the prime minister said the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees democratic governance and democratic values, adding that sovereignty rests with the people and elected representatives are entrusted with serving the public as a sacred responsibility.
He said Parliament serves as the constitutional forum where laws are enacted through public representation, while Pakistan’s parliamentary democracy has made significant progress in ensuring inclusive representation across different segments of society.
Sharif noted that reserved seats for women, religious minorities, smaller provinces and other underrepresented groups in the National Assembly and Senate reflect the country’s constitutional commitment to inclusive governance. He added that the Senate further strengthens Pakistan’s federal structure by providing equal representation to all provinces.
The prime minister also emphasized that transparency, public access to information and citizen participation are fundamental principles of democracy. He said Parliament has taken important steps by making legislation, committee reports and other parliamentary documents publicly accessible.
He added that Pakistan’s Parliament continues to play an active role in international parliamentary diplomacy through participation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union, parliamentary friendship groups and other global forums, promoting peace, sustainable development, human rights, gender equality and international cooperation.
