Mexico ended a 40-year FIFA World Cup knockout-stage drought by defeating Ecuador 2-0 in the Round of 32 to secure a place in the Round of 16.
Quinones opened the scoring for Mexico before Jaime Nenes added the second goal, sealing a comfortable victory for El Tri.
The win marks Mexico’s first knockout-stage victory since the 1986 FIFA World Cup, ending four decades of disappointment and sending the co-hosts into the Round of 16.
Mexico will now face the winner of England vs DR Congo in the Round of 16.
Earlier in the tournament, France also booked its place in the Round of 16 after defeating Sweden.
