Eighty countries have called for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz at the United Nations.
According to a report by The News International, Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani read a joint statement at the UN, saying Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz posed a continuous threat to global security, maritime rights and freedom of navigation.
The joint statement also strongly condemned the resumption of fighting by the Houthis in Yemen, their continued attacks on Saudi Arabia and attacks in the Red Sea.
The report said the supporters of the statement included Gulf Arab states and major Western powers.
The statement warned that Houthi advances toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait would create further risks for global maritime trade, maritime security and international shipping.
According to the report, Iran and the Houthis describe their actions as defensive measures.
