President of the country, Dr. Arif, has dissolved the National Assembly upon the advice of the Prime Minister, after which the federal cabinet has also been dissolved.
Prime Minister Shabaz Sharif had sent the summary of the National Assembly analysis to the President today, on which Dr. Arif Alvi has signed.
The President dissolved the National Assembly on the advice of the Prime Minister under Article 58-1 of the Constitution.
According to Article 58 of the Constitution, if the President does not dissolve the Assembly within 48 hours of the Prime Minister’s recommendation, the Assembly dissolves automatically.
The Prime Minister has also requested the President to form an interim government in the summary of the dissolution of the Assembly.
On August 6th, the government had announced that the Assemblies would be dissolved 3 days before their scheduled term, on August 9th (today), and elections would be held within 90 days thereafter.
After the Assembly’s dissolution, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition will consult under the name of the Caretaker Prime Minister, and if they cannot reach a consensus within the next three days, the matter will be referred to a committee formed by the Speaker of the National Assembly, which will finalize a name for the transitional Prime Minister within 3 days.
However, if the committee cannot reach a decision within the stipulated time, the names of the nominated candidates will be sent to the Election Commission of Pakistan, and the commission will then have two days to make a final decision.
