Another Pakistani has made it to the British House of Lords. Lord Shafaq Mohammed, nominated by the Liberal Democrats, took his oath on the Holy Quran before giving his first interview.
Lord Shafaq Mohammed stated that his ancestors were laborers and that his journey to the House of Lords was long and filled with hard work. He served as a council group leader in Sheffield for 20 years and also worked in the European Parliament.
He shared that he never imagined becoming a Lord. He was born in a mud house in Chak Sawari, where there was no electricity or running water, and his mother had to fetch water from a well.
Lord Shafaq Mohammed described Britain as a land of opportunities, saying that he is a living example of this. His message to the youth was that no matter where they come from or whether their parents are wealthy, they can still achieve success through hard work.
Speaking about social issues, he stated that only a few individuals are involved in grooming crimes, but they have tarnished the reputation of the entire community. He urged that such bad elements within the community should not be defended.
He further emphasized that their elders used to lower their gaze out of respect when seeing women. As a Lord, he vowed to work on resolving issues related to Kashmir and the broader community.
