The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast an intense heatwave across most parts of the country in the coming days and has advised the public to take precautionary measures.
According to the Met Office, unusually high temperatures are expected in northern regions, including central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Temperatures in these areas are anticipated to rise significantly above normal, urging residents to avoid direct sunlight and adopt safety measures against extreme heat.
From May 16 to May 20, southern Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan will also continue to experience intense heat, with daytime temperatures expected to soar 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average.
The department has predicted hot and dry weather for most parts of the country over the next 24 hours. In plain areas, the intensity of heat is likely to increase further. However, Kashmir and surrounding hilly regions may witness partly cloudy skies, strong winds, thunder, and light rain in some areas during the afternoon.
Over the past 24 hours, several regions also experienced extreme heat. The highest temperatures recorded were 48°C in Dadu and Turbat, 47°C in Dera Ghazi Khan, and 46°C in Noorpur Thal, Bhakkar, Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur, and Nokundi.
The Met Office has specifically advised elderly citizens, children, and individuals with health conditions to avoid unnecessary sun exposure, drink plenty of water, and take appropriate precautions to prevent heatstroke.
