The Government of Sindh has officially declared a public holiday across the province on August 9 to mark the Urs of the revered Sufi poet, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai. A formal notification has been issued to this effect.
According to the notification, all public and private institutions in Sindh will remain closed on this day, allowing citizens to observe the spiritual occasion with reverence and enthusiasm.
The provincial government has also directed educational institutions to celebrate “Latif Day” on August 8. Colleges across the province will host special events highlighting the teachings, poetry, and Sufi philosophy of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai. This initiative aims to connect the younger generation with Sindh’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, regarded as Sindh’s greatest Sufi poet, is renowned for spreading the message of love, peace, and humanity through his poetry, especially the celebrated work “Shah Jo Risalo.” His Urs attracts hundreds of thousands of devotees each year to the town of Bhit Shah, where they pay homage at his shrine.
A philosopher, poet, and musician of the 18th century, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, passed away in 1752 in Bhit Shah. His shrine remains a spiritual center for devotees, where his Urs is commemorated annually with deep devotion for three consecutive days.
