Turkey has signed an agreement with the United Kingdom to purchase 20 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to further strengthen its air defense capabilities, which is being described as a major milestone in defense relations between the two countries.
The special ceremony in Ankara was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. On the occasion, President Erdogan said that the agreement marks a new era of strategic cooperation between Turkey and the United Kingdom, which will strengthen relations not only in the defense sector but also in technology and industry.
According to reports, the total value of the deal is around $11 billion, and the first batch of Eurofighter jets will be added to Turkey’s air fleet by 2030. The Turkish Ministry of Defense says that the government is also considering buying 12 Eurofighter jets each from Qatar and Oman to maintain its defense superiority in the region, especially against rival countries like Israel.
According to Turkish officials, under the long-term plan, Turkey intends to purchase a total of 120 modern combat aircraft. It should be recalled that in July this year, an initial agreement was reached between the two countries to purchase 40 Eurofighter aircraft.
