Karachi: Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah has announced that a complete ban will be imposed on the import of exotic animals in the province, and strict legal action will be taken against individuals keeping unregistered or illegally acquired animals.
A meeting of the Wildlife Department was held under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary, during which officials briefed the participants in detail. The session revealed multiple violations of the Wildlife Protection Act 2020 at the Karachi Zoo, highlighting the need for immediate corrective measures.
Asif Haider Shah stated that a consultative meeting with wildlife experts will soon be convened to formulate an effective strategy for the protection of wildlife. The meeting was also informed that 129 wildlife-related cases are currently pending in various courts.
He added that there is a request to the Chief Justice of Sindh to ensure the early hearing and timely decision of these cases to strengthen wildlife protection efforts.
The Chief Secretary further emphasized that all owners of exotic animals must comply with registration requirements and adhere to the guidelines related to proper living conditions for such animals.
During the meeting, the Chief Conservator of Wildlife stated that the Karachi Zoo does not meet the legal standards required for housing large animals. On this occasion, the Chief Secretary directed the Wildlife Department to initiate immediate corrective actions at the zoo.
