Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, has expressed deep concern over the rising threat of terrorism emanating from Afghan soil, calling it a direct and severe danger to Pakistan’s national security.
Addressing a session at the UN, Asim Iftikhar stated that several terrorist groups—including ISIS-K, Al-Qaeda, TTP, BLA, and the Majeed Brigade—are taking advantage of safe havens inside Afghanistan. These groups have intensified cross-border attacks, creating major security challenges for Pakistan.
He noted that although the Afghan Taliban administration has repeatedly pledged that Afghan territory will not be used against any country, the situation on the ground tells a different story. Certain elements within the Taliban continue to facilitate or overlook the activities of terrorist outfits, resulting in deadly attacks inside Pakistan. According to Pakistan’s data, more than 1200 people have been martyred in terrorist incidents this year alone.
Asim Iftikhar emphasized that the Afghan authorities must take concrete, verifiable actions against all terrorist organizations operating from their soil. He warned that if the current situation persists, Pakistan reserves the right to take all necessary defensive measures to protect its sovereignty and citizens.
Regarding Afghan refugees living in Pakistan, the envoy reiterated that the war in Afghanistan has ended, and therefore Afghan nationals residing in Pakistan should now return home. He stated that Pakistan has hosted millions of Afghan refugees for decades, but given current economic and security challenges, a respectful and gradual repatriation has become essential.
He urged the international community to support the repatriation process and help Afghanistan develop the infrastructure and stability required to absorb returning populations.
