Under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, the federal cabinet discussed urgent legislation for judicial reforms in a meeting, and by the end of the meeting, the cabinet approved the bill on judicial reforms. According to the new law, the Chief Justice alone will not have the authority to take notice, rather a committee consisting of three judges will be responsible for forming suo motu and benches.
The National Assembly session, chaired by Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, continued until late at night, during which the Judicial Reforms Bill was presented by Federal Law Minister Nazeer Tarar.
Nazeer Tarar stated that a committee will decide on the verdict of suo motu, two senior judges will be part of the committee after the Chief Justice, the committee will assign the matter to a bench consisting of at least three judges, the right to appeal within 30 days of the suo motu notice will be recommended, and if an appeal is made, a hearing will be held within 14 days and a decision will be made. For cases like this, the hearing will be expedited to within 14 days.
The Ministry of Law proposed this bill, keeping these factors in mind, and it will be implemented immediately.
