US President Donald Trump has proposed a significant increase in military spending in the 2027 budget, requesting $1.5 trillion for the Pentagon, which accounts for approximately 4.5 percent of the country’s GDP.
According to international media reports, the proposed budget includes a 44 percent increase in defense spending, which is about $455 billion higher than the current fiscal year. The allocation includes funding for the Golden Dome missile defense system, investment in critical minerals, US shipbuilding, and salary increases for military personnel.
Reports indicate that US defense spending has steadily increased over the years, rising from $320 billion in 2000 to $997 billion in 2024, reflecting a strong upward trend.
Compared to the United States, other major countries spend significantly less on defense, including China at $317 billion, Russia at $150 billion, Germany at $86 billion, and Saudi Arabia at $79 billion.
The proposed budget also includes $73 billion in cuts to non-defense sectors, affecting various programs in health, housing, and education. These cuts include a 19 percent reduction in agriculture, 13 percent in housing, and approximately 12 percent in health and human services.
At the same time, funding for the Department of Justice is proposed to increase by 13 percent, while $10 billion is allocated for the National Park Service and $481 million for aviation safety and hiring air traffic controllers.
According to international media, Trump’s proposal aims to strengthen defense capabilities while reducing non-defense spending, at a time when the national debt has exceeded $39 trillion.
