The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has warned that the economic impact of the ongoing war in Iran could push more than 32 million people worldwide below the poverty line, posing a serious threat to global poverty reduction goals.
According to the report, experts have described the situation as “development in reverse,” indicating that years of economic progress could be undermined, with key factors including rising energy prices, increasing food inflation, and a slowdown in global economic growth.
The United Nations stated that the war has disrupted global energy and food supply chains, with developing countries being the most affected, where, instead of a decline, poverty levels are now expected to rise.
Experts further warned that if the crisis continues for an extended period, global economic instability could intensify, while millions of people in vulnerable economies may once again be pushed back into poverty, worsening social and economic challenges.
