Electricity consumers across Pakistan may face higher power bills after the Central Power Purchasing Agency submitted a request to increase electricity tariffs by 82 paisa per unit.
The request has been filed under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism for May.
According to the agency, the average fuel cost for electricity generation during May stood at Rs9.25 per unit.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority is scheduled to hear the petition on June 30 and will decide whether to approve the increase after reviewing the relevant data.
If approved, the proposed adjustment could place an additional financial burden of approximately Rs12 billion on electricity consumers nationwide.
Energy experts note that monthly fuel cost adjustments are routinely made to reflect changes in fuel prices used for electricity generation, with the impact ultimately passed on to consumers.
A final decision will be announced after the regulatory authority completes its review process.
