Preparations are underway in Iran for the funeral and final rites of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
According to Iranian media, Khamenei’s body has been moved to Imam Khomeini Hussainiya in southern Tehran ahead of the funeral prayers.
The funeral prayer will be held in Tehran tomorrow. Following the ceremony, the body will be taken from Tehran to Qom and later to Najaf and Karbala.
It will then be returned to Iran, where Ali Khamenei will be buried in Mashhad. Iranian media reports suggest that more than 10 million people are expected to participate in the funeral procession.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will travel to Iran today with senior cabinet ministers to attend the funeral.
The Iranian government has announced a nationwide public holiday on July 6 for the funeral ceremonies, while July 8 will be observed as a national day of mourning.
Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28 during the initial US and Israeli attacks on Iran. His daughter-in-law, the wife of current Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, was also killed in the attack.
