Severe flash floods have caused widespread destruction in northeastern Afghanistan, leaving at least 20 people dead, more than 80 injured, and over 100 others missing.
According to local authorities, the flooding struck Nuristan province on Monday, with the provincial capital Parun and nearby areas suffering the most extensive damage.
Afghanistan’s disaster management agency said the bodies of at least 20 victims have been recovered, while more than 80 injured people have been taken to medical facilities. Search and rescue operations are continuing for those still missing.
The floods swept away shops built along the riverbanks in Parun, leaving behind thick mud, debris and large boulders across the affected areas.
Officials said hotels and dozens of shops were completely destroyed, causing significant damage to local infrastructure.
The disaster management agency has also warned of more rain and storms in several provinces and urged residents to stay away from rivers, streams and other flood-prone areas.
