Islamabad: The federal government has imposed an electricity rate hike on the people overnight, raising the electricity price to 7.50 rupees per unit.
According to the details, the federal government has increased the electricity price up to 7.50 rupees per unit, a hike of 3 rupees to 7.50 rupees per unit in the basic tariff of electricity.
Sources reported that the approval for the tariff increase was given through circulation in the cabinet meeting. NEPRA had initially proposed an increase of 4.96 rupees per unit, which was approved for the current fiscal year.
The government has forwarded the request for the increase in the base price to NEPRA, which will make the final decision after the hearing. NEPRA will consider the subsidy adjustment before making a decision. After NEPRA’s decision, the federal government will issue a notification for the increase, and the revised rates will be applicable from 1st July.
For households consuming up to 100 units, the electricity cost has been increased by 3 rupees per unit. For those using between 101 to 200 units, there is an increase of 4 rupees per unit. Customers consuming between 201 to 300 units will face an additional charge of 5 rupees per unit. For 301 to 400 units, the increase is 6.50 rupees per unit, while those consuming between 400 to 700 units will bear an additional cost of 7.50 rupees per unit.
With these increases, the average per unit tariff will rise from 35.42 rupees to 42.72 rupees. After the implementation of the sales tax, the unit price will reach up to 50 rupees. The suggested date for the application of these price hikes is 1st July, and after approval, the remaining charges for July will also be collected from the consumers.
