The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced that fixed charges for domestic consumers will be collected starting July 1. The details of these charges have been released.
Consumers using up to 200 units will not be subject to fixed charges. Those using between 301 and 400 units will be charged Rs. 200 per month, while consumers using between 401 and 500 units will pay Rs. 400 per month. Additionally, those consuming between 501 and 600 units will be charged Rs. 600 per month, and consumers using between 601 and 700 units will be charged Rs. 800 per month.
For usage above 700 units, a fixed charge of Rs. 1,000 will be levied. The purpose of these increased fixed charges is to boost the revenue of electricity distribution companies.
In other news, the federal cabinet has approved the dissolution of the boards of nine public sector electricity distribution companies. The Cabinet Committee on State-Owned Enterprises endorsed the decision, following recommendations from the Board Nominations Committee, chaired by the Federal Minister for Power. New boards will be formed for LESCO, FESCO, MEPCO, GEPCO, and IESCO.
New boards will also be constituted for PESCO, KESCO, TESKO, and HESCO. However, the Prime Minister has halted the reconstitution of the boards for SEPCO and HESCO.
Recently, the federal government has introduced amendments to the Act of 2023 concerning state-owned enterprises. An ordinance has been introduced to address the removal of legal obstacles and complexities in dissolving the boards of public institutions.
