A storm of inflation has spiraled out of control in the provincial capital Lahore, leading to a sharp rise in the prices of vegetables and fruits, putting a heavy financial burden on the poor and making daily shopping increasingly difficult for them.
The government has increased the prices of four vegetables in the official price list, causing the prices of green spices to skyrocket.
In Lahore’s markets, onions are being sold for 150 rupees, tomatoes for 160, garlic for 740, and ginger for 450 rupees per kilogram. Meanwhile, spinach is priced at 50 rupees, fenugreek at 80, eggplant at 80, and potatoes at 120 rupees per kilogram.
Purchasing fruits has also become a burden on the public, with apples priced at 320, bananas at 220 per dozen, and guavas at 220 rupees per kilogram. Seasonal fruits have also seen significant price hikes, with oranges being sold between 280 and 350 rupees per kilogram.
On the other hand, the price of broiler chicken has decreased slightly by 4 rupees, now available for 591 rupees per kilogram, while the price of eggs remains stable at 300 rupees per dozen.
In neighborhoods, markets, and upscale areas, the sale of vegetables, fruits, and chicken at prices higher than those listed in the official rate lists is further increasing the public’s distress. The public has demanded that the government take action to control the prices of essential goods.
