Islamabad: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sherry Rehman has claimed that a 100-year record of water shortage in the Indus River has been broken.
PPP leader Sherry Rehman expressed concern over the water crisis in the Indus River, stating that the river has reached its lowest water level.
She said that due to climate change in Pakistan, rainfall has decreased by 40 percent, and water flow at Sukkur Barrage has dropped by 71 percent. Additionally, there is a 65 percent water shortage across all three barrages.
Sherry Rehman stated that the 100-year record of water shortage in the Indus River has been broken. Three provinces of Pakistan are facing drought-like conditions, and there is no water available for agriculture. However, instead of conserving water, more canals are being dug.
She said that underground water is being extracted recklessly in large quantities, and the shortage of water is posing threats to both the agricultural sector and human life.
The PPP leader said that water scarcity is a national emergency and not a political issue. She added that the PPP will never compromise on the people’s right to water.
