The Senate of Pakistan unanimously passed a resolution condemning India’s baseless allegations against Pakistan and aggressive actions such as the unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, in response to the recent Pahalgam attack.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar presented the resolution on behalf of the entire house during a Senate session, which was subsequently approved.
According to the resolution, Pakistan rejects India’s baseless accusations, condemns all forms of terrorism, and denounces the attempt to link the Pahalgam attack to Pakistan. It stated that any Indian misadventure would be met with a strong response, and Pakistan would not compromise on its national security.
Before presenting the resolution, Ishaq Dar addressed the Senate, saying the nation has always stood united in difficult times. He called India’s attempt to blame Pakistan for the Pahalgam incident regrettable.
He added that at the time of the incident, the Prime Minister was in Ankara, and he was also present there. Despite that, he remained in contact with the Foreign Ministry. Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned from a visit to Saudi Arabia, held a meeting, and took questionable actions thereafter.
Dar stated that India’s steps indicate clear accusations against Pakistan. In response, a National Security Committee meeting was called the next day. India, using the attack as justification, suspended the Indus Waters Treaty under the Indus Water TTT framework.
He emphasized that the treaty can only be terminated by mutual consent. India had been corresponding over the TTT framework for two to three years but has now unilaterally suspended the treaty. He remarked that future wars are predicted to be fought over water.
Dar also said that water is the lifeline for Pakistan’s 240 million people, and this treaty involved Pakistan giving up two of its rivers. He added that Pakistan views India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty as an act of war, and the National Security Committee declared that blocking water is unacceptable under any circumstances.
He stated that blocking water is akin to waging war and that Pakistan has decided to suspend agreements like the Shimla Accord. India closed the Attari border, and Pakistan has decided to shut the Wagah border. All visitors from India have been asked to return by April 30. All visas under the SAARC framework have been suspended, though Sikh pilgrims will not be barred from entering.
Dar further announced that Pakistan has closed its airspace to India and suspended India’s trade via Pakistani routes to third countries. Indian defense and air advisors have been declared persona non grata and asked to leave Pakistan. In response to India limiting Pakistani High Commission staff to 30, Pakistan has reciprocated.
He concluded by stating that Pakistan is fully prepared to respond to any aggression. The armed forces are on full alert, and any hostile act will be met with a response similar to the past. He warned India not to make the mistake of disturbing regional peace. He also thanked all political parties for their unity and said the Leader of the Opposition accepted the draft with an open heart.
Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, he said, and the Foreign Secretary has briefed 26 countries. A press briefing has also been conducted in line with the National Security Committee’s decisions. “Allah has made Pakistan a nuclear power, and we are ready,” he affirmed.
