Islamabad: India has blocked the flow of the River Chenab, violating the Indus Waters Treaty and international laws.
According to Indian officials, 90% of River Chenab’s water has been stopped at the Baglihar Dam, and a plan is underway to block the flow of water into River Jhelum through the Kishanganga Project as well.
Due to India’s actions, the water level in the River Chenab has significantly decreased, with the flow at Head Marala dropping from 87,000 cusecs to just 4,300 cusecs, whereas under normal conditions, it should be between 25,000 to 30,000 cusecs.
The situation of the River Ravi has also deteriorated, as India constructed three dams there in 2001, reducing Pakistan’s share of Ravi’s water by up to 75%. Now, Ravi only flows to some extent during the monsoon season, while for the rest of the year, its flow nearly ceases.
