Polling has begun for the by-election on the general Senate seat from Sindh, which became vacant following the death of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Taj Haider.
Members of the Sindh Assembly have started casting their votes, and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah is also present in the assembly.
According to Sindh Election Commissioner Ejaz Anwar Chauhan, the Sindh Assembly has been designated as the polling station. PPP’s Waqar Mehdi and MQM’s Nighat Mirza are contesting candidates. The polling, which began at 9 AM, will continue uninterrupted until 4 PM.
According to the Secretary of the Sindh Assembly, 161 members are eligible to vote in the Senate election. PPP holds 116 seats, MQM has 36, and PTI-supported members number 5. A candidate needs 81 votes to win the Senate seat.
PPP holds a clear majority in the house, making Waqar Mehdi’s victory highly likely; however, MQM Pakistan is also aiming to assert its political influence. The Election Commission and Sindh Assembly administration have made complete arrangements to ensure peaceful, transparent, and organized polling.
