ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the recent salary increase for key parliamentary figures, including the Chairman Senate and the Speaker of the National Assembly.
According to media reports, the Prime Minister has immediately sought a comprehensive report from the Speaker and the Senate Chairman to determine the basis on which the salary hike was approved.
This action comes in response to public backlash and criticism, especially at a time when government employees have received only a 10% pay raise and the country is already facing economic hardship.
It is worth noting that following the budget announcement, the Finance Minister clarified that salaries of ministers and parliamentary leaders had not been revised for several years, which made the adjustment necessary. However, dissent has also emerged from within the government over the decision.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif called the hike inappropriate, labeling it a form of “financial dishonesty” that is fueling public resentment.
The Prime Minister has decided to review the matter and determine the next course of action based on the report, which could include reversing or revising the salary hike.
The issue has sparked controversy at a time when inflation continues to burden ordinary citizens, making the pay increase for government officials a highly sensitive topic.
