Karachi: A major power outage has occurred at the Dhabeji Pumping Station, the city’s most vital water supply facility, raising concerns of a severe water shortage across Karachi over the next 36 hours.
The power disruption at Dhabeji has affected the city’s main water supply line. Due to this technical fault, the daily supply of nearly 100 million gallons of water has been disrupted, potentially impacting millions of residents.
According to a private news channel, the power supply at Dhabeji abruptly ceased due to a malfunction in K-Electric’s system, recorded at 12:20 AM. This shutdown directly affected the pumping system, particularly Line No. 5, which suffered technical faults at two separate points, halting water supply to several areas in the city.
A spokesperson for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) confirmed that as soon as the breakdown was reported, engineering and operational teams were dispatched to assess the situation. The Chief Executive Officer of the Water Corporation immediately instructed the commencement of repair work to avoid a prolonged crisis.
KWSC stated that repair work on the damaged line is progressing swiftly, and it is estimated that normal supply will resume within the next 36 hours. However, during this period, residents—especially those in areas directly linked to the Dhabeji station—will continue to face water shortages.
Citizens expressed concern over recurring breakdowns, which severely affect Karachi’s infrastructure and daily life, especially during rising temperatures and increased water demand.
The power outage has not only disrupted the pumping system but also increased pressure on water pipelines, potentially leading to further damage.
Meanwhile, residents have once again questioned why such critical infrastructure has not been secured with alternative power sources or backup systems. They criticized the recurring crisis following every power cut as a sign of administrative failure.
