The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning regarding the potential threats arising from the ongoing monsoon rains across various regions of the country, expected to last until July 25.
According to the NDMA spokesperson, heavy rains in the northern areas may trigger hazardous natural events such as landslides and the outburst of glacial lakes, potentially leading to floods. Areas at higher risk include Reshun, Brep, Booni, Sardar Gol, Thulo, Hanarchi, Darkut, and Ishkoman, where the situation could become particularly severe.
As per NDMA’s latest reports, a significant rise in water levels is anticipated in the Indus, Chenab, Jhelum, and Kabul rivers. In particular, low to medium-level flooding is expected at Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad on the Chenab River.
Similarly, a rise in water levels is forecasted at Mangla on the Jhelum River and at Nowshera on the Kabul River, while dangerous inflows are expected at the Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma, Taunsa, and Guddu barrages on the Indus River.
The spokesperson added that in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rivers such as Swat and Panjkora, along with other streams, may experience flooding. Rivers in Gilgit-Baltistan, including the Hunza and Shigar, as well as their tributaries, are also at risk of flooding.
Flash floods are also feared in mountainous areas such as Shimshal, Hushe, Saltoro, and their surrounding regions. In Balochistan, the districts of Zhob, Sherani, Sibi, and Musakhel may also see flash flooding in local streams.
Furthermore, the NDMA reported that due to landslides, the Karakoram Highway and Babusar Top have been closed from both directions. Tourists have been strongly advised to postpone any travel to mountainous or affected areas until July 25 to avoid potential dangers.
