The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a warning that India may release water within the next 72 hours, which could lead to an increase in water flow in the River Sutlej and its adjoining streams, raising the risk of a low-level flood.
According to PDMA officials, if water is released from India’s upstream reservoirs, the River Sutlej at Ganda Singh may experience flooding. Recently, there has been a significant and unusual rise in water levels in Indian dams, heightening the threat.
The Director General of PDMA stated that because of this situation, deputy commissioners of Lahore, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Vehari, and Lodhran have been put on high alert to ensure preparedness for any potential emergency.
As per PDMA data, the Bhakra Dam on the River Sutlej is currently filled to 61% capacity, Pong Dam has reached 76%, and Thein Dam is at 64%, making the release of water more likely.
