Karachi: A massive fire broke out early Monday morning at a three-story garments factory in New Karachi’s Sector 8-A, causing the building to collapse during firefighting operations. At least four people, including rescue workers, were injured and rushed to a nearby hospital.
The fire started around 6 a.m. on the ground floor of the facility and quickly spread to engulf the entire structure. Initially, two fire tenders were dispatched to the scene, but as the blaze intensified, reinforcements were called in. Fire brigade officials confirmed that ten fire tenders and a snorkel were deployed to contain the flames, with both water and foam being used in the operation.
Chief Fire Officer Humayun Khan said additional units had been sent to assist, including eight KMC fire tenders, two bowsers, a snorkel, and five Rescue 1122 fire trucks supported by an ambulance. “Our priority is to stop the fire from spreading further to adjacent factories and residential areas,” he said.
Rescue 1122 officials reported that the building suddenly collapsed under the intense heat while firefighters were inside. Injured personnel were pulled out from the rubble and shifted to hospital. Authorities later confirmed that no other workers were trapped, though a precautionary search-and-rescue operation continues.
The blaze also spread to two adjoining factories, further complicating efforts to douse the flames. In total, 11 fire tenders and a snorkel are now engaged in the operation.
This is the second major industrial fire in Karachi in less than a month. On August 7, a blaze at the Landhi Export Processing Zone brought down a five-story factory, injuring seven people and affecting four nearby factories.
