The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has confirmed that Pakistan will be connected to the global network through three new submarine cable projects within the next 12 to 18 months. The initiative is set to significantly strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure and improve the quality of internet services nationwide.
According to ministry officials, the new submarine cables will provide Pakistan with direct connectivity to Europe. This will reduce reliance on existing limited routes and offer more diverse and secure pathways for internet traffic. Authorities noted that the development will not only enhance international connectivity but also improve internet speed and the quality of online services, benefiting the public, businesses, and educational institutions.
The announcement was made during a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on IT, chaired by Federal Minister Syed Amin-ul-Haque. The committee was informed that agreements for all three submarine cables have already been finalized, and work is underway.
Secretary of the Ministry of IT and Telecom, Zarar Hashim Khan, stated that the projects will substantially increase bandwidth capacity and ensure a more stable and reliable internet experience for users.
Committee member Sadiq Memon raised concerns regarding recent internet disruptions, to which the ministry assured that the addition of new submarine cables will resolve long-term connectivity issues and further enhance online services.
Experts believe these projects will serve as a milestone for Pakistan’s digital infrastructure, opening new avenues for economic growth, e-commerce, the IT sector, and online education.
