Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Barrister Gohar, has said that the 27th Constitutional Amendment is against the spirit of the Constitution and poses a serious threat to the federation. He stated that PTI will present its formal response to the amendment within Parliament.
Speaking during the National Assembly session, Barrister Gohar said that constitutional amendments are never carried out in this manner, and neither was PTI consulted nor was the draft of the 27th Amendment shared with them. He added that pushing such an amendment would further divide the nation and deepen existing political fractures.
Barrister Gohar pointed out that 56,000 cases remain pending in the Supreme Court and questioned the absence of senior judges who were responsible for addressing these cases. He said that the founding PTI chairman remains in jail for the sake of the public and is committed to upholding the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law.
He cautioned that the proposed amendment poses direct risks to the structure of the federation, especially at a time when provinces are still waiting for the 11th NFC Award. Granting excessive powers to specific individuals, he said, would weaken national unity and indicate a plan to reduce the provincial share under the NFC.
Barrister Gohar argued that the government has no moral authority to introduce constitutional amendments, noting that such changes are made worldwide only through broad consensus, not political expediency.
He added that bringing the 27th Amendment is equivalent to dividing the country further and urged the government to focus on completing its remaining tenure responsibly.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, speaking in the Assembly, said that the government is not seeking control over schools or colleges but rather aiming to improve and standardize the curriculum. He said all decisions will be made through consultation with coalition partners, adding that a unified education system is essential for Pakistan.
He further stated that rapid population growth is a major challenge, and the NFC issue will also be settled through consensus. He urged PTI to return and participate in parliamentary committees, condemning efforts to make the 27th Amendment controversial.
Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry also said that PTI must clarify its policy regarding terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, adding that the Afghan Taliban should end their support for the outlawed TTP. He expressed hope that the ongoing dialogue with Afghanistan will yield positive results.
Regarding meetings with the founding PTI chairman, he said that all procedures are clearly defined in the jail manual and must be followed. He stated that PTI leaders’ statements were against state interests and advised them to correct their course.
