The federal cabinet meeting, scheduled today under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss and approve the draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, has been unexpectedly postponed. Cabinet members have been officially notified of the postponement, but no details have emerged regarding the reasons for the delay.
The meeting was set to take place in Committee Room No. 2 of the Parliament House, where key governmental matters and proposed constitutional amendments were to be reviewed. According to sources, a new date for the meeting is expected to be announced within the next few days.
Meanwhile, Adviser on Political Affairs Senator Rana Sanaullah stated that the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz have already reached a consensus on the establishment of a constitutional court. He added that both parties also agree on the provisions related to Article 243.
Speaking to a private news channel, Rana Sanaullah said that only one unified draft of the 27th Amendment will be presented. He confirmed that the draft would be tabled before the federal cabinet tomorrow, after which it would be sent to the Senate for approval. Once approved, it is expected to be tabled in the National Assembly on Monday or Tuesday.
He further stated that the amendment draft will be referred to relevant standing committees, where it will undergo two days of discussion. If the Senate approves the draft on Monday, the National Assembly will then require at least three days to pass it. He clarified that the proposed amendment does not seek to alter Article 243, as the article does not relate to assigning any constitutional role to the armed forces.
