Australian police have confirmed that the two attackers involved in the deadly shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney were a father and son. New South Wales Police shared the details during a press conference, stating that the shooting took place during a Jewish gathering and caused widespread shock across the country.
According to police, one of the attackers was killed at the scene, while the other was arrested in a critically injured condition. The New South Wales Police Commissioner identified the deceased attacker as 50-year-old Sajid Akram, while the injured suspect was identified as his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram.
Police further revealed that Sajid Akram had legally held a firearms license for the past 10 years and was also a member of a gun club. A total of 6 weapons were recovered from his possession, and investigations are ongoing to determine whether all of them were used in the attack.
Authorities also confirmed that 2 active improvised explosive devices were found near the crime scene and were safely secured to prevent further harm. Police announced that the search for additional suspects has been concluded, but investigations are continuing to determine the motive behind the terrorist attack.
The police commissioner stated that the father and son had been residing in Australia for a considerable period, though further details regarding their background cannot be disclosed at this stage.
Meanwhile, the Australian government has declared a national day of mourning in response to the tragic incident. National flags on all government buildings will be flown at half-mast.
It is recalled that the shooting at Bondi Beach resulted in the deaths of 16 people and left 40 others injured. During the police response, one attacker was killed and the second was taken into custody in an injured state.
