Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the anti-Pakistan Indian film Dharinder, an old photograph of actor Akshaye Khanna with former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and former President Asif Ali Zardari has gone viral on social media, further intensifying the debate.
According to reports, the film’s trailer has drawn strong criticism for allegedly featuring unauthorized images of Pakistani political figures, the Pakistan Peoples Party leadership, and party flags. The issue has sparked widespread reaction across social media platforms and political circles, where strong opinions are being voiced.
The Pakistan Peoples Party and other political groups have demanded that proper legal permissions should have been obtained for the use of all political images and content in the film. A petition filed in court states that the unauthorized use of such material could create a misleading and negative impression of the party and its leadership.
Experts believe that the social media uproar triggered by Dharinder is further fueling discussions about the film’s impact and political sensitivities in both countries, while fans and critics remain firm in their respective positions. However, the background and authenticity of the viral photograph have yet to be fully established.
PPP worker Muhammad Aamir has filed a petition in court accusing the film’s director, producers, and actors of illegal use of content and defamation. The petition maintains that legal authorization was mandatory for including images and videos of Benazir Bhutto, party flags, and political rallies in the film.
Meanwhile, a rare old video has also gone viral on social media, showing former Pakistani cricket captain and former Prime Minister Imran Khan dancing at a charity event in 1989 alongside Bollywood actress Rekha and actor Vinod Khanna. Social media users suggest that the dance style shown by Akshaye Khanna in Dharinder closely resembles that of his father, Vinod Khanna, adding to public interest in the video.
Users say the viral image has further intensified the debate, especially at a time when the film’s release has heightened political sensitivities in both countries. Critics argue that Dharinder portrays Pakistan’s political background and public conditions negatively, potentially affecting the reputation of individuals and the public alike.
