Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that January 5 marks the day when the United Nations Security Council resolutions formally recognized the right to self-determination of the Kashmiri people.
In his statement issued on the occasion of Kashmir Right to Self-Determination Day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that on January 5, 1949, the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan adopted a historic resolution that acknowledged the Kashmir issue at the international level.
He stated that the resolution decided that the future of the state of Jammu and Kashmir would be determined through a free and impartial plebiscite, but regrettably, this commitment has not been fulfilled due to India’s illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir.
The prime minister said that the people of occupied Kashmir have been facing oppression by Indian occupying forces for the past eight decades, yet all tactics of repression and violence have failed to weaken the determination and resolve of the Kashmiri people.
He urged the international community to take concrete steps to end India’s oppressive actions and ensure the implementation of United Nations resolutions on Kashmir.
It is worth noting that Kashmir Right to Self-Determination Day is being observed today by the people of Kashmir, Pakistan, and Kashmiri communities across the world to highlight the unresolved Kashmir dispute and demand the fulfillment of international commitments.
