US media has claimed, citing officials from Iran’s health department, that the number of people killed during violent protests in the country could exceed 30,000.
According to the reports, Iranian health officials stated that more than 30,000 people were killed on the streets during violent protests that took place on January 8 and 9.
US media further reported that two senior officials from Iran’s health ministry said security forces opened heavy fire on protesters, leading to a situation where vehicles available for transporting bodies became insufficient.
Health officials added that the state also ran out of body bags, forcing authorities to use large trailers to transport bodies during January 8 and 9.
Meanwhile, a US-based human rights organization stated that it has verified 5,459 deaths so far and is currently investigating the deaths of an additional 17,031 individuals.
It is worth noting that Iran’s Legal Medicine Organization had earlier reported that a total of 3,117 people were killed during the recent violent protests.
